Strengthening the legacy of historic fortresses through cooperation and cultural tourism
FORTE CULTURA® is the European Cultural Route of Fortress Monuments and represents the European cultural heritage of fortress monuments from the introduction of firearms to the end of the Cold War on the tourism market. Under the motto ‘Fortresses for culture and peace’, tourists can conquer over 60 FORTE CULTURA fortresses in 14 countries.
FORTE CULTURA is also a European network dedicated to promoting, preserving and enhancing the value of historic fortresses and their cultural heritage. The association brings together cities, institutions, museums, associations and tourism stakeholders associated with fortifications. The aim is to raise public awareness of the historical, architectural and social significance of these often overlooked structures, which make a significant contribution to our understanding of European history.
Main objectives
- Promote Europe’s fortress heritage as a tourist and cultural attraction.
- Strengthen cross-border cooperation between cities and regions with fortresses.
- Stimulate sustainable development of fortress areas through tourism, culture and creativity.
- Support measures for the restoration, preservation and conversion of fortresses.
- Develop educational and awareness-raising programmes for citizens, schoolchildren and visitors.
Activities and initiatives
FORTE CULTURA organises events, conferences, workshops and exchange projects to promote cooperation between the various stakeholders. The most important initiatives include:
- Transnational thematic routes linking fortresses in several European countries.
- Publications and information materials that convey the history, architecture and special features of the fortresses.
- Information and awareness campaigns for the general public.
The significance of European fortresses
Fortresses are silent witnesses to centuries of history, conflicts, political and social change. Castles, fortresses, bastions and walls tell stories of defence, technological progress and urban development.
FORTE CULTURA is committed to transforming these places into living spaces that facilitate dialogue between the past and the future, create new development opportunities for local communities and offer visitors unique experiences.
